A well-attended groundbreaking ceremony under sunny skies was held on Friday, March 1 at the shoreline end of Marina Way South, across from the old Ford Building. Named for Lucretia Edwards, the new shoreline park pays homage to the longtime Pt. Richmond resident who has worked tirelessly for the improvement of her community and to save Richmond’s historical landmarks.
Thirty years ago only 30 feet of Richmond’s 32 miles of shoreline was accessible to the public (near Cutting Blvd.). Today, thanks to the vision, tenacity and activism of Lucretia Edwards and her friends and neighbors, there are 3,000 acres of shoreline parks in Richmond!
Former Richmond Mayor, Rosemary Corbin, was the Mistress of Ceremonies. She introduced our current Mayor, Irma Anderson, as well as the Richmond City Council, and a host of other well-known Richmond and West Contra Costa County personages who turned out to honor Ms. Edwards. Lucretia and her three children were present to receive the adulation of the large crowd that had gathered to honor the tireless efforts of one woman that benefit us all.
The park is scheduled for completion later this year.
