February 13, 2002 MBNC Minutes

1. After the social hour at The Boathouse, President Geri Brown called the meeting to order at 7:30 PM and introductions around the room were made. This was the first meeting for the new board: Geri Brown, President; Gilda Waldman, Vice President; Pat Kiely, Secretary; Jana Johnsen, Treasurer, and Virginia Finlay, Immediate Past President, and all were present.
2. Beat Officers' Report: "lowest crime rate in a long time." Seven actual crimes out of 37 calls, mostly car burglaries and auto thefts. Traffic tickets are being written! Sgt. Ron Berry, head of Parking Crimes (510-620-6621), pointed out that there will be a new Watcher Vehicle Program with stickers where cars will be stopped between the hours of 1 - 5 AM. Marina Bay has been chosen as the trial neighborhood council for this pilot program. He will return to the next meeting with more details. Sgt. Berry also mentioned the $500 LoJack Tracking System, which can be installed on most cars. For further info, contact LoJack.com. For problems with identity theft, call the Richmond PD at 510-620-6721.
All officers present reminded us to not just let folks in who are sitting in cars at the key pads of our respective gates. In other words, wait them out (unless, of course, they are recognizable). They also counseled that we keep our sliders and windows locked as well as to not leave our garage doors open as there have been property thefts...especially in the warmer weather when we tend to leave things open and unlocked.
3. Candidate's Night: A. Karen Leung Fenton, current School Board President, spoke FOR Measure D, which is the $300,000,000 school bond issue to improve WCCC Schools. It gives the school district the right to sell bonds. She stated that our school district has 35,000 students and is growing at 1.5% per year. It will cost each home approximately $125.
The invited guest AGAINST Measure D did not appear.
B. Two candidates and one stand-in for the 14th District Member of the State Assembly spoke to us for three minutes each and answered questions from the audience:
-Emily Chang for East Bay native Dave Brown, Democrat, a current teacher, former businessman and policy aide.
-East Bay Native Charles Ramsey, Democrat, a functioning attorney, currently on WCCC School Board.
-Loni Hancock, Democrat, former two-term mayor of Berkeley.
-Joel Golub, was granted time to address the gathering about his experience to be Superior Court Judge.
4. There being no old or new business, Geri Brown gave an update that the Ford Building contract had been awarded to Assembly Plant Partners, and made several announcements: -March 30 Easter Egg Hunt at Nichol Park; -Richmond Police Dept., is looking for volunteers for their events; -Black History Month, Sunday February 24; -Lucretia Edwards Park groundbreaking on Friday, March 1 at foot of Marina Way S. -Voting for Marina Bay residents will now take place at The Harbormaster's Office...and no longer at The Boathouse!
Arnie Kasendorf announced there will be a Richmond Commission on Aging Honors ceremony (need date) for 108 years young Edna Samuels, the oldest woman in Contra Costa County.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned exactly at 9 PM.
Respectfully submitted:
Pat Kiely, MBNC Secretary
